Salamat nga pala kay Monix sa code! Yun lang muna, Toodles!!!

This entry seems ages ago. Yet somehow, it is me. This journal is almost six years old! Has it really been that long?

Remember how they said that something always comes in threes? Well the universe conspired against me in a span of four weeks.

February 27: I left my wallet inside a cab. Stupid me, I know. What's inside: Credit Card, ATM, Ateneo Senior ID, MTV Debit Card, SSS ID, Tito Lito's "excuse" card. No cash.

March 23: I accidentally left my back pack at the Baggage Counter of the grocery of SM Marikina. Was able to retrieve it the next day.

March 24: On my way to covering a necrological services at Greenmeadows, my phone decided to slip out of my pocket. Luckily, the taxi driver was kind and honest enough to drive back from wherever to return my phone.

You think some have it bad, eh?

It has been 4 years since I left the Ateneo High School Covered Courts a final time. A lot has happened since then. There's no turning back, but there are times I wish to.

Well, I get to see the Aerie again this week. Wheee!

----------------------------

I am just so pissed right now, my uncle lost my ID while trying to get my birth certificate at the NSO. I would not have mind really, excpet that a new one would cost me 400 bucks. Talk about a really unnecessary expense.

The McDonald's Commercial "El Bimbo"

Arguably one of the best commercials around. It features great production designs- they really captured the late 80s!

Plus, the sounds they used really worked. It's a great combination for nostalgia tripping: 80s glam plus 90s music.

Guilty Pleasure

I spent the first two nights of 2009 glued to my boob tube. There was thie special on QTV entitled 101 Reasons the 90s Ruled. IT was such a huge nostalgia trip that reminded me of my growing up years. Though some of the events were too early or my consciousness then (since i was age 6-17 during the entire run of the 90's), they still made their way into my consciousness. There were times I was laughing my head off, because admittedly I fell for some of the trends- and I still have my Dr. Martens to prove it!

The countdown is down to 61 so far (to be continued next Thursday). Among those mentioned in random order were:
Lorena Bobbitt and her "cut"
The Ben Stiller Show
Twin Peaks
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Baby Doll Dresses
Marky Mark (the rapper and CK model, pre-Mark Wahlberg)
Doc Martens
Pokemon
Furby
The Arsenio Hall Show
Compact Discs
Saved By The Bell
Melrose Place
Pre-Federline Britney Spears
Mickey Mouse Club
Ally McBeal
Gwyneth and Brad/J.Lo and Puffy
Pre-Guy Ritchie Madonna and her reinventions
Xena, Warrior Princess
Ear Piercings and Tattoos
Seattle and Starbucks
Scream (the Movie)
ER and George Clooney

I'll post probably more next week. Expected to be there are: BSB and NSync, Spice Girls, Dawson's Creek, Charmed, Beverly Hills 90210 and Baywatch

Is There Anyone Alive Out There?

Out of boredom this long (and I mean loooong) break, I watched Titanic again on DVD. It was the first time I watched the film in entirety since 2002 or 03. Weirdly enough, though I think majority of it is cheese now, I still like the movie, not the film.

As every O2001 boy in the planet would attest, I was a definite Titanic fan 10 or so years ago. I even had this Titanic notebook in second year. Practically I never knew what I put in it, odds and ends I think. I memorized majority of the dialogue of the film, and to top it all off, I actually loved My Heart Will Go On.

Though I admit I loved the film then for shallow reasons, among them Leonardo DiCaprio. There is a different reason why I like the movie now. It is more of nostalgia: It reminds me of the time when I was less cyncical, when the world was mine for the taking, and before negativity and pessimism threw part of my optimism out of the window. Looking at the scenes make me yearn to go back to that innocent time in my life.

I still like Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio (whose acting chops have definitely matured, thank god!), though as to My Heart Will Go On, nostalgia has its limits!

Friend 1: Friend, ang tagal-tagal mo naman. Pinagmukha mo naman akong tanga sa paghihintay sa iyo.

Friend 2: Friend, hindi mo na kailangan ang tulong ko para magmukha kang tanga. You can do that on your own.

Defining the Cinematic Experience

In my previous entry, I rambled on and on about the Love of Siam that I deviated from the purpose of that entry- what constitutes a cinematic experience?

A cinematic experience for me is when the film engage. It evokes a thought process that makes you think. As such, something changes within you in the time you spent watching the film, and thus emerge from the experience different.

An excellent review of Love of Siam

Stolen from PinoyExchange.com

To label Chukiat Sakveerakul's The Love of Siam as simply a gay teen romance is to misjudge its power and intention. Within the two and a half hour running time (the director's cut is reportedly four hours long) of the film, Sakveerakul essays not only the two young leads' reunion and inevitable attraction but also a family's slow and painful road to accepting a long-delayed reality. I would like to think that The Love of Siam, above everything else, seeks to reaffirm the life-affirming values of loving and being loved without sacrificing the portrayal of the very palpable pain that usually accompanies the emotion.

The twenty-minute prologue tracks the histories of young Mew (Arthit Niyomkul) and Tong (Jirayu La-ongmanee), who are both schoolmates and neighbors. They form a very close friendship which was abruptly ended when Tong's family had to move out when **** (Laila Boonyasuk), Tong's elder sister, went missing during a trip in Chiang Mai, causing the family tremendous and irreparable sorrow. Years later, Mew (Witwisit Hirunwongkul), lead singer and composer for an up and coming boy band, again crosses path with Tong (Mario Maurer), who is struggling at home with his domineering mother (Sinjai Plengpanich) and alcoholic father (Songsit Rungnopakunsri). The two reconnect and inevitably fall for each other, disrupting whatever peace they have grown accustomed to.

To make matters more complicated, Mew's Chinese neighbor Ying (Kanya Rattanapetch) is hopelessly in love with Mew, not knowing of his homosexual tendencies. On the other hand, Tong is currently dating Donut (Aticha Pongsilpipat), presumably not knowing of his own homosexual tendencies too. Tong's family, more specifically the father who's been spending days and nights drinking, is still suffering from the loss of ****. June (also played by Boonyasuk), Mew's band manager who looks a lot like ****, is then recruited to pose as the long lost daughter, momentarily easing the father of his staggered pains.

The Siam in the title refers to Siam Square, a shopping district in Bangkok where most teens hang out to shop, dine, meet, and have fun. Siam Square, in the eyes of the Bangkok youth, has become both the place for welcomes and farewells, of declarations of love and hurtful break-ups, of chance encounters and scheduled meetings. In the film, the popular venue is not only the setting for Mew and Tong's reunion and the numerous other events in the story but it also represents the unpredictability of the many facets of love which the film so intricately paints. While Siam Square or any other shopping mecca are ordinarily thought of as accessories to the bastardization of love and romance because it commonly equates blatant commercialism with the love's outward depictions like dating, gift-giving, and hanging out, The Love of Siam uses that very element to depict love's many wanderings and permutations. Underneath the glow of the traditionally amiable romance, The Love of Siam strives to say something more about the act of loving, whether romantically or familial: that it is more a nebulous network-like journey to maintain hope than a straight path to the assumed happy ending.

In fact, The Love of Siam ends without any of its characters fulfilling the traditional conclusions of a love story. There are no happily-ever-afters or expected closures. Instead, the film ends with a mere spark of hope. That hope that closes the film actually opens up million of possibilities for its characters, as numerous as the countless fortuitous encounters in Siam Square that initiate relationships between strangers or abruptly conclude long-standing affairs all within the fateful movement of time. Sakveerakul drafts a bittersweet ode to the complexities of loving, which commercial cinema has tended to avoid throughout the years. What he exclaims in The Love of Siam is that daringly traversing outside the common simplicities of love is far more gratifying than safely assuming formula.

Through the interconnected lives of two boys who are on the verge of self-awareness amidst their own individual conflicts and the people surrounding them, Sakveerakul notes that love survives notwithstanding the dilemmas that pervade the world. As Ying translates from a Chinese song, "as long as there is love, there is hope." Corny as it sounds, the Bangkok of The Love of Siam thrives on that noble aspiration, without knowing that it does so.

A Cinematic Experience

  • Oct. 18th, 2008 at 1:27 PM
harry
With the advent of DVDs and piracy, it is said that the theater is finding tougher competition. Yet there are some movies that require an altogether viewing at the theater for the full effect, that the TV and computer monitor simply won't do. this is the cinematic experience.

I caught The Love of Siam at the Cinemalaya at Gateway earlier this evening. Never mind if I have seen it before, but I feel that I need to experience it at the theater. And true enough, it ended up as one of my cinematic experiences. I was able to appreciate the cinematography more.

Furthermore, watching it larger than life reaffirmed my love for the film, that it made me cry again. Somehow, I really can relate to Mew (Witwisit Hiranyawongkul), which is perhaps why i became so attached to this movie. The cinematic experience seems to affirm that attachment.

The Bonggang Bonggang Bonfire

  • Oct. 2nd, 2008 at 3:17 AM
harry

September 30, 2008. All roads led to Katipunan Avenue that night, literally. There was a juge bottleneck at the said avenue as ateneans of every color, gender and size trooped to ye olde Alma Mater. Never mind if it rained earlier that afternoon, thereby rendering Bellarmine Field muddy. (Boo for me for not having the guts to trample across the muddy field- a life lesson learned from the 2002 Bonfire).

Even if my bonfire experience was relegated to Xavier Hall and the surrounding areas, it still felt good to come home to Ateneo. I missed hanging out and walking around campus, never mind if there were changes from the time I studied there (though can I just say they murdered the SocSci Building with the ghastly add-on). Somehow, I just felt home. It was also nice to see familiar faces, as the bonfire proved to be a reunion of sorts.

More than the victory, the bonfire was a coming home of sorts- a reason to see friends and renew old ties. Of course, it was even better because we are the champs, but overall... it was the camaraderie that made the experience worthwhile!

How The Bright Blue Eagles Fly

I know there are about a hundred blogs here in multiply alone heralding the triumph of Ateneo over La Salle. Well... here's one more. Bwahahahahahaha.

An Ateneo-La Salle duel has always been a match destined for epic proportions, especially if it is a finals match. Expect the hype, the scalpers, the overnight vigil for tickets, since a finals like this comes only every so often. It is a date with destiny.

Thursday's match is Ateneo's second title in six years- I was a sophomore the first time they snagged it. What makes it sweet is that both times, they faced La Salle. With all the game's hype, it all came down to who wanted it more. After all these years, the heart of the Atenean has never faltered.

Congrats to Ateneo. It was one helluva big fight! and you never failed.

See you at the bonfire!

Finding my Dusha

I have to admit that for a while I was disillusioned with writing, I always wanted to write, blog about something but when I face this screen, I don't feel any driving force to do so. Hence, the thoughts are left fluttering away from my subconcious.

Weirdly, I regained my dusha in the most unlikely of places- a forum website. I began writing, and there has been nothing but kind words regarding what I wrote. It's words like those that inspire and give heart to pursue something that I feel like doing. For a while I struggled with what I really wanted to do in life, and through this, I felt that somehow, I found a way to express my voice as a person and as an individual.

ADM 102: Introduction to Ateneo-La Salle Games
Thu/Sat/Sunday, 4:00 PM, Araneta Coliseum
Course Prepared by: Miguel Lizada
Course Instructor: TBA

Course Description

The course introduces the student-cheerer to the dynamics and principles of the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry. The course employs both theoretical and application dimensions. The theoretical phase exposes the student to the history of the rivalry, the tradition of cheering, the construction of the ideal Atenean 6th Man, and other theoretical concepts.

The application phase on the other hand requires the student to put into practice all the theoretical principles. These practices include, among others: effective skills in lining up for the games, cheering (pre-game, during the game, half-time and post-game), jeering, heckling, creating effective posters and banners for one's favorite players and posing and smiling for Fabilioh.com.

Course Requirements

Written Long Test: This will assess your memorization of the tradition and history of the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry. The test consists of itemized Multiple Choice questions and True or False statements.

Oral Exam:
The student will randomly draw two cheers from a lot. The student must cheer/sing the cheers he picked. Afterwards, he must be able to explain the significance of the cheer/song. He must also be able to identify when these cheers/songs are used.

Practical Exam:
The student must line up for tickets. This is a pass or fail exam. If the student is able to acquire a ticket, he automatically gets an A. If he doesn't get any ticket, he must take the Make-Up Test.

Make-up Test: Negotiating with Scalpers. Students who wish to pass the first practical exam for the course but failed to do so must take the Make-Up test. The student must locate a scalper within the vicinity of Araneta Coliseum. This is not a pass or fail test. The student's grade depends on how he was able to acquire a good ticket with the lowest possible price. The better the ticket with lower ticket price, the higher the grade.

Final Exam: Students are required to cheer during the game. The grade depends on the voice quality and frequency of the cheering. The Ateneo standard grading system will be applied. Therefore the passing score for the Final Exam is 70%. Students who cannot stand up and cheer 70% of the time automatically fail the exam.

Bonus points are given to students who are able to convince others to cheer loudly, either through a well-articulated speech or forceful coercion. Extra points are also awarded to fans who make creative banners for their favorite players.

Written Long Test: 20%
Oral Exam: 20%
Practical Exam: 20%
Final Exam: 40%

Course Policies and Other Reminders

1. Plagiarism. Plagiarism is an extreme offense in this school. Do not copy cheers from other schools.
2. Cellphone Use. Using your cellphone to place in bets is illegal. Do not get yourself into trouble.
3. Cuts. Once you are inside Araneta, you are not allowed to leave. You must watch all four quarters. Win or lose, you are not allowed to leave before the Song for Mary is sung.

I can't get enough of ABS-CBN's new soap Iisa Pa Lamang. Never mind the old plot and some bad acting (though a lot of the stars are good). What I really love about it is the dialogue. It is time camp made its way back to primetime since Impostora!

I've been meaning to write down this entry for almost two months now, but everytime i come to this page where I transfer thoughts onto the screen, my mind just suddently becomes blank. It has been quite a while since it happened.

My existence into this world has passed a threshold where I no longer consider my self part of the that young crowd. I have gone through as some would say a quarter-life crisis, perhaps i still do. But I realize there are other things to dwell upon, more things to to waste my energy and thoughts.

A survey question got me thinking: what would you have want to achieve in 10 years. Honestly, right now, I am still not sure what I want done in that time. It is a not too distant future, but I know i'll get there. Right now, let's focus on 25 and what I wanted to achieve at 25. I achieved some of it, some remain in my dreams.

Right now, the only thing i see myself doing in 10 years is establishing a cat sanctuary, where I could adopt stray cats, similar to what PAWS has done, only for cats.

10 years is still far from the corner.

Here's to being 25 and to continuing aspiring for more!
